Christ, these people think that you just pull up in your SUV and snap a couple pics of the wild life and move on. This is serious hunting and stalking. PIG, be careful out there.

Wait, maybe it is just driving up to them and taking pics.

PIG, dress up like wounded impala and get us some action shots please.

Those lions are thinking, "Mmmm, lunch."

I wonder if the lion bit the tire flat?

Just a couple of curious young juvenile males, from the same litter apparently. They have identical markings, so they were probably run out of the pride by the father, and they are just checking out those strange metal boxes with the round thingies on the bottom.

No, dogs would be that stupid. Those are cats, juvenile or not, they know the smell of food. This is just like a tin of domestic cat food to them. They're just trying to find out how to open it or wait for more cats to come with a can opener. Biggrin

That's actually pretty interesting. The guides round here will tell you that lions (and all the animals actually) don't distinguish you from the vehicle as long as you don't break the silhouette. That's why they're so big on you not leaning out the window. I'm not sure I totally agree with them though. That first shot of the lion was taken from an open sided vehicle (ie. no windows) and the kitty was so close I had to stand up and take a step back to get it to focus. That fucker was watching me. We locked eyes. But he wasn't at all interested in making me lunch.

I don't know big life foundation. There are lots of anti-poaching agencies. The biggest problem we have here at the moment is with rhinos. I think Kruger alone has been averaging 1 a day for the last couple of years. The south african national parks forum has had a ban on mentioning where you've seen them for a year now. You can also not mark it up in camps (they have a map of the surrounding areas up, and little magnetic markers to show where things have been spotted that day). I pay an annual membership for a card that gets me into some of the parks round here. a portion of that goes to anti-poaching, and a portion of all the fees we pay when we visit. I've been wanting to volunteer as an "honourary ranger" for a while now, but I don't know if I have enough time to be of any use to them.

No mountain gorillas round here.

So as it turns out, this was a very unproductive trip as far as photography goes. I'll put up some pics from previous trips.

Anyone who's lived with a house cat knows that what those rangers tell you about the lions not being able to distinguish you from the vehicle knows that's a load of shit. Their noses work quite well and can tell you are food and not the car!

The only reason we are not second on the food chain under big cats is because we need artificial weapons to kill them else we'd be cat food too.

I wonder if the park staff does throw some of them some food on occasion to make sure they are not that hungry during tourist season? I mean look at them! They're quite fat for wild cats, even on a reserve.

So your 'season pass is like our season pass to theme parks? Your theme park is way cooler except you don't have Kingda Ka!
