Too dangerous to ride everywhere here. Then there is the high probability of your bike being stolen.

We have the means for cheap gas. The fucking hippies have been preventing that with the very things you described above.

Uh huh, and cars don't get stolen? Well, I live among humans, so theft isn't much of a problem.

Sucks you don't live in a bikeable area. Missoula has bike lanes everywhere, and streets are painted with symbols of a guy riding a bike -- by law, bikes can pedal on that road as traffic and motorists better beware. I ride to the side of things, but sometimes, it's hard to do that with cars parked on the curb.

We may have the means, and those means should be available to the public. But I do not make the mistake of thinking we somehow deserve cheap gas for whatever personal reason. Doesn't the rest of the world DESERVE cheap gas? Who is supposed to provide this gas that we demand be cheap? I am sure it is out of respect for the fact we just plain deserve it.

Don't get me wrong, high gas prices fuck me when I drive. I have a full size Chevy (which does really well surprisingly enough), but I don't expect cheap gas to drive it all over the place.

Cheap gas would be nice.

But it will most likely never be back. Maybe that is a good thing. That way the market can drive people to cars that get better mileage. As long as gas was cheap we were gonna keep driving behemoths. Myself I mostly gave up driving V-8's over ten years ago. Except for my '66 mustang I haven't owned one in that long. Because I like to drive fast. Not because gas. I figured if I didn't do something I would not have a license for long.

Now I drive 5 miles to work one way, 10 round trip. A year ago it was a 60 mile round trip. Plus I am making about 20% more now. Summer is here, so I can ride. But I don't pedal like you are talking about Gunnen. I worry more about my kid than myself. He is young, just starting, I know him and his girl friend live on the edge sometimes. But shit, that is what being young is for. Learning, and making mistakes.

A motorcycle is incredibly fuel efficient. It's insane.

And yea, be worried about your son. Christ, I have had too many brushes with death to go tempt fate by shoving my thumb up her asshole on a motorcycle. I would love to ride an old Triumph like my Dad had, but oh well.

Learning and making mistakes sometimes kill you, but damn, if it isn't done, well, that is a fate worse than death methinks.

The Kuwaitis, Qataris and several other middle eastern oil producing countries have gas prices in the range of $0.09 - $.0.25 per gallon. Now think......if we would be tapping our own reserves then we too could have very cheap petroleum products for sale domestically.

The fucking environmental wackjobs have created this current situation over the course of the last 40 -45 years with all this "green energy" shit. Should we strive to use less polluting fuels? Yes. Is it possible to replace petroleum fuels with current technology? FUCK NO!

If you're going to propose that we replace it then quit bitching and start WORKING on viable alternatives!!!!!!!!! Otherwise quit pissing about the prices and take action to get the costs down. Uh maybe putting those restrictions on drilling and well operations wasn't such a good idea after all.

Typical ass backward leftist thinking.

Still hanging at $3.95/gal here for 87 octane.

I don't like being forced to purchase a vehicle out of gas price and economy necessity.
I don't like being squeezed out of political agenda.
I feel the current situation with prices is exactly for these reasons. It has nothing to do with fairness that we should be paying what the rest of the world pays. Fuck them. We are not them.

We also refine gas for a good amount of countries. That's part of the reason they pay more.

LK is right - but I don't see the hippies allowing much of that to change. Maybe a decent president can make an EO and get it done. I dont' see why not, Obama has used that EO to do whateverthehellhelikes.

With regard to the being forced to buy more efficient vehicles......that's easy to say but not a cover all situation. I for one need to have larger vehicles due to where I live and the need to carry more passengers/cargo in a single trip.

Try this math out.

Plymouth Voyager minivan VS Smartcar.........

Voyager 22 MPG
Smartcar 40 MPG

I bulk shop for canned goods and non perishables at Aldi's. The nearest store is 25 miles away so buying in volume is how I can justify the trip. The more I can transport, the more worth it the trip is.

With the Voyager I can go to the store with 3 passengers (making shopping a less time consuming venture by splitting the list up) and procure everything I need for 6 months. This vehicle is capable of then transporting everything back home.

The Smart car is set up for 2 people. This means it will take longer to get what i need and further, it can't transport everything in one trip. I would need to make 2 trips.

Each leg of the trip is 45 minutes drive time considering that I have to run through several towns to get there and back. An average time at the store with 4 people is 40 minutes with 4 people doing the shopping.

Voyager

1 trip
Drive time total 1.5 hours
Shopping time total 40 minutes
At 22 MPG total fuel used 2.27 gallons

Smartcar
2 trips
Drive time total 3 hours
Shopping time total 2.66 hours
At 40 MPG total fuel used 2.5 gallons

Adjusted to compare with a single trip for the Voyager the Smartcar then averages 20 MPG.

Add to this that it takes 5.66 hours not counting turn around time to unload and go for the second trip with the Smartcar and just over 2 hours with the Voyager.

As well......count in wear and tear on tires, oil, vehicle parts etc and also factor in that I would be driving twice the mileage to accomplish the same task......this creates twice the chances of an accident (statistically speaking).

Now why the hell would I want to spend 6 to 6.5 hours (factoring in turn around time) to do something I could do in 2 hours and 10 minutes AND use nearly .25 gallons less fuel by having the lower MPG rated Voyager?

Yes the MPG is lower BUT......the net total fuel use is lower when capacity is factored in. As well the time invested to accomplish the task is reduced by 66%.

No brainer when you work it out.

I'll wait until a good looking, safe seeming smart car is developed before I even consider it. Sorry. Those things look no safer than a motorcycle or using a skateboard on the interstate.

We're like you, we buy a lot in bulk and we just don't have what is needed close by to make it worth readjusting our lives. the truck is also needed for work purposes.

NYS charges an extra DMV fee for any vehicle over 6 cylinders under the guise of gas guzzlers! That's relatively new since there was never a charge per cylinder when I lived there.

and then what happens in winter? I won't ride a bicycle or motorcycle in the winter. Let's not forget my physical issues that prevent me from exercising at all sometimes.

I just don't like being forced into something under the guise of necessity. It's right up there with the health care bill IMO.

It isn't always the rider but the other road users that are a bikers danger.

We lost 2 bikers locally last month, both due to 'I Didn't See You' drivers. Bart was 55, a member of the group No1 son belongs to.
The biker who was knocked off his bike with a woman trying to scoot across the traffic to get parking slot out side the KFC (no parking zone too) was across from where I work. He was 45 and in a local rock band.
Both seasoned bikers.
I never stopped my kids from riding. Christine was never happy on a bike of any description but did cycle off road with her boyfriend and his family. No1 son cycles to work and been riding a motorbike since he was 16. All of us have had spills and all usually due to road conditions (with me it was black ice) or other road users lack of consideration Banghead .

No1 son says his Fazer will give 200 miles on a full tank- £20

He bought his first car today. A black Mk3 Golf TDi. It looks tidy, previously owned by a couple of women and then an elderly gentleman and then his grandson, who didn't want it (already has Mk4). Had it checked out by Mark's school friend who owns his own garage and he was impressed, everything was good in the engine and polished to eye hurting gleam but not to hide anything dodgy.

Diesel is dearer and at £1.72 in Hampshire (where it came from) £20 only gave 1/4 of a tank.
He gives himself a £50 fuel budget monthly.
(Just been told he got a pay rise last month....22pence)

Who are you guys arguing with? I'm not pushing the agenda you are against. I don't give a shit if you take three people in your mini van, if you drive a truck for work etc.

And no the 'smart' car is always a loser. They test out at like 32mpg in tests. My old boss got 38 out of his Honda Civic. AND he got a back seat, and a trunk. And most hybrids are economical losers too. Compare the price of Fusion hybrid, and a regular. Then how much money you will save. It used to be a ROI of around five years. But I haven't looked lately.

My complaint has always been the one woman taking her Expedition to the mall by herself. Or the one guy that commutes in his dually Dodge and it has never hauled anything or towed anything. But fuck, if that is how they want to spend, in the end I really don't care. I guess it just seems stupid to me is all. But it's still a semi-free country.
