So, Joan and I go to Wendy's yesterday. After a long and drawn out ordering process, we come to the payment. 9 dollars 16 cents as I remember it. I hand the poor girl a ten dollar bill. Just after she started punching in our purchase, I inform her I have the 16 cents.

The look of confusion on her face was amazing! She must have looked dumbfoundedly at my coins for about 15 seconds, and then called a manager to help her out!

I got my buck back as change, thanks to the manager, and Joan and I enjoyed our lunch.

Why do I tell this story?

I tell it because I'm a little concerned about our 'future's' math skills.

My goal this summer is to do the same to as many people as I can. Just to test their simple math skills. I will document my daily activity right here.

I welcome each of you to do the same, and post here as well.

My kids know all that and more they both 5&8 yrs old know how to make change with money, since they were small and because I collect coins they learned all about them and what they are worth.
My 8 yr old daughter told me yesterday that she got in trouble for reading another student Edgar Allen Poe. The teacher took the book because it was not 2nd grade level. My daughter got pissed and recited "The Raven" one of her favorite poems. I would have loved to see the look on the teachers face. Good

Good for her. I had a challenge from my teacher in 5th grade that I couldn't read Moby Dick. I brought it in for my book report. I was insulted and he gave me an extra 2 weeks to complete it since it was a long read for a 10 year old. I got a B- on the report. Not bad for a kid!
Why do they always think a younger kid can't read above the level of the rest of the class. And why would that teacher reprimand the girl for reading that to another kid? You should have had a fit with her for censoring your kid.

We knew how to count money before we started Kindergarten. We also knew how to read words before that too. When I was in the first grade and they gave me those stupid Dick & Jane books without words I was totally lost and had a way different interpretation of each image. The teacher thought I was nuts.

My dad was a cabbie and he had that change "machine" that went on his belt. We would play with that and he taught us how to make change while playing.

Many things should be taught at home. Ya gotta be involved or this kinda stuff goes unnoticed. I will be right up that teachers ass the next time this shit happens. My wife complained the day it happened. The thing is that the Poe book was in the classroom on a shelf. And thats what she picked to read.

That makes the teacher's censorship even more ridiculous. You wife should have taken the book and hit her over the head with it.

I like to pay a 9.16 bill with 10.25. You can actually see smoke coming out of their ears.

Another good one is if the bill is say 32.37 and you give them 42.50. They sit and stare and try to give you back the extra two dollars and change, then they ring it up and realize you get a 10 back instead of smaller bills. FUNNY.

We should keep a tally here all summer. Post the state, restaurant, and amount and of course the reaction. At the end of the summer, we'll see what area has the most dumb-asses.

Add Customer Service at TD Bank to the list.

I have an extra $180 I can't figure why on my main checking account. I want to switch my debit card to the other account for 10 days so I can let this account lay dormant and let things catch up without the need to transfer money from one to the other when I need funds.

I keep explaining to the girl on the phone that my checkbook says (fake amts for examples) $3 while TD says I have $400. She tries to explain to me how to reconcile a checkbook and that maybe there are pending amounts not recognized yet. I explained to her THREE TIMES that would mean I show $400 and YOU say $3. She can't get it through her thick skull that they are telling me that I have more than I think.

Dopey put me on hold and I hung up. I'll just save myself the aggravation and go into the bank directly and ask for a debit card specifically for the other account. I can deactivate it in ten days then.
