We watched this last night. Way better than I expected, but a real heavy movie.

About a young girls' struggle out of the ghetto, out of a horrifically abusive family full of physical, mental abuse and incest. She gets kicked out of school due to being pregnant and winds up in an alternative school where she really comes out of her shell and wants to do better for herself. The end of the movie you just keep catching your breath and saying, "How fucked up is that?" But in the end, you wind up saying, "Good for her."

It also gives you a realistic inside look at the welfare mentality before the big "reforms" started taking place. I know this to be true because my mom worked for the NYC Housing Authority in some of the worst neighborhoods. She told me similar stories of the things she had to witness when she needed to go to an apartment in the project, always with a two police escort. Not all stories were bad though, there were plenty of good people there too, but the bad ones were never 'slightly' bad. I hope things have gotten better but reality tells me I'm dreaming.

I agree with everything Joan said.

Let it be known that I had no desire whatsoever to see this movie, but once we put it on, I was stuck in my seat.

Glad I watched it!

Super duper good. I just kept thinking "I can't believe people are that fucked up" and then watch more of the movie and it would be even worse. It wrenched my heart.

It's amazing how awful people can be to each other isn't it? We were riveted watching it.

I had bought this DVD and kept putting it off thinking it was going to be really depressing and I was surprised at how funny some of it was. Excellent performances all around, even Mariah Carey.
