I'm sure everyone understands the heartbreak this brings you Twitch.
Just remember, we should be as lucky as he is to be able to go when it is time and not suffer, and you both have been better off somehow for having crossed paths.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I feel blessed to have had this dog and I wouldn't have unless I met Matt. It's his dog and he's taking this really hard.

I'm undecided if we should wait until awhile after midnight so the vet doesn't feel like crap and to give him the opportunity of saying he made it to the new year and 17 years old. We deemed his birthday at Jan 1 because we have no exact date he was born.

You know, we're doing better than expected. The vet had a hard time too. We sat there for awhile shooting the shit and it kind of helped. Dr Laura likes him a lot and it was hard for her. But she did make it a little easier for us. She saw him last in September and she said he had that 'spacey' look in his eyes. He also peed inside the building, something which he would never do in his right mind.

He was the perfect dog. Always willing to please and would take a bullet (literally) for anyone in his house. He got to go with dignity and without pain and that's saying more than any of us humans get to expect.

Isn't it odd that "they" think of animals as dumb or insignificant to the point that euthanasia is OK for them but "they" say it's not acceptable for humans?

You know, we had his ear that Daisy bit off three years ago in the freezer in an airtight bag and we brought it with. We said he deserves to go back "whole". Laura got a huge kick out of that. We needed to bring a little levity to the situation.

Considering the circumstances, it sounds like it went well.

It did. Thanks all for your support. It means a lot to know you're in like company with things like this.

No bones about it though, it sucked!
Joan neglected to mention what a weeping little mess I was. She also didn't mention the fact that we were under the impression that the clinic was opening at 5 pm due to the holiday. So around 4:30 we went to Pet Smart, bought our normal load, 2 cases of cat food, and a bag of litter. Also bought some snausages as a last little treat for Goliath. The whole time, I'm getting myself ready for the inevitable. We get to the clinic a bit after 5, and they are closed. We call, and get only an answering machine. As it turns out, Joan got some misinformation, and the clinic opens at 8.

I am convinced that life has a funny way of playing these little practical jokes on you.

Needless to say, I was a wreck when the time came, I couldn't even hand the leash over civilly, I just kinda threw it and said 'let's get this done'

Eh, Matt,
That stuff always wrecks me too, my wife usually has to take charge as I can't bring myself to do it.
I feel for ya.
Sometimes it sucks to be a responsible pet owner.

Matt, Goliath was lucky to have you and Joan as his humans. I feel for you as I know how tough it is to let go of a long time furry friend.
