It is going to largely depend on what device you want it for. If you want recommendations for software in general... Sourceforge is always a good place to browse for free stuff before you start looking at paid shit.

For Android Apps, I limit myself to what is on Google Play, the Amazon App Store (if you have an Amazon account there is a free App of the day every day, some good, some shit..., but paid apps for free!), SlideMe, and the Opera Mobile Store
