Cheesecloth straining is exactly what you need to do.
Run it through as many times as needed to effect a noticeable color change in the oil. When it begins to clarify the color will lighten.
You'll get no better mileage from it but it will be a good (free, hopefully) source of auxiliary fuel for you.
Yes, you can mix it with regular diesel. I'd recommend no more than a 10% mix during the cold weather and experiment with higher concentrations during the warm months.
