Pace or "Race"? - Twitchin Kitten - 06-28-2012

Calling all cyclists --- when you go out on your "regular" rides, do you push for speed or do you ride "with ease"?

I use my gears and just ride comfortable. Sometimes if I'm feeling a little ambitious I'll push until my lungs burn and my legs turn to jelly, but most times I just take an enjoyable ride. I'm also a bit asthmatic so those times I push the weather has to be "right". Too cold sets off an attack and too hot makes me feel like I can't get any air, but not an attack.

I push for endurance when I go out. It doesn't have to be 'speed' as long as it makes me stronger. I usually relax on the downhill, but use it to get me over the next hump.

But I am in it to build up my strength. I also carry my smart phone and play my favorite Classic Rock, through my Bluetooth stereo headset, to keep my juices pumping. Nothing like a little bit of "Don't Tell Me You Love Me", "No One Like You", or "Addicted To Love", to keep the excitement going. Yahoo

You know, I dont' like listening to music when I ride. I like to hear the sounds of the woods and ocean and on the road, especially around here, I most definitely want to hear what's going on around me.

Well I'm only getting into it properly now. I'm still trying to get my fitness up. I grew up on BMXs, and rode my brother's mountain bike for a while after that. But he'd been knocked over on it, so the back wheel was a little buckled, resulting in brakes being applied for like 3/4 of each revolution. Also, it was stuck in a pretty steep gear. Result being that I hardly ever change gears. Heart rate monitor told me I hit 193 bpm more than once last time out, and averaged 171. Supposed to be going for a longer, more relaxed ride tomorrow.
