The only place I can think offhand that has sort of geology as a common occurrence is the British Isles.

Tait, I don't believe you will find basalt like that in any of the British Isles. I don't know of any active, or recently active, volcanoes there.

Check yourself, John. Ireland and Scotland have several formations that are famous:

There doesn't have to be any active, or recently active, volcanic activity to form these formations. It could have happened a billion years ago, or 50 million, what have you.
So this place is on or near an active margin...
