He was being held back by the jockey for most of the race, which means this horse is hard to pace and save energy. He'll never be the long distance runner for long races like this. You can tell because his neck was 'up' and it looked like he was 'stomping his feet' as he was running. They also boxed him in a bit and when the jockey finally took him to the outside, he was already tired from fighting the bit. From this image, it doesn't look like anything that would hold him back. My own horses have done this and carried on like nothing happened. Looks like he clipped it himself too. I'm surprised he didn't pull his shoe. ![]()
