This bitch is taking her time getting here. We're bored out of our minds right now but on a good note, even if the electric goes out later, we're having steak dinners. Gas cook-top will work with the power out Smile

I've been through quite a few hurricanes and I've never seen one take such a long time to crawl up the coast. I think they said it spent 21 hours in the Carolinas and it's barely reached the Del Marva now.

I was thinking of those poor wild ponies on Chincoteague Island Sad There's really no shelter for them and most of their home is on beach and swamp grass lands.

I just want this over with now, it's beginning to bore me.

It just started raining here. I think this will be a bigger flooding event than people think. If it stalls and moves slow it will just keep on dumping more and more water.

RE: IRENE is coming! - Twitchin Kitten - 08-27-2011

That's exactly what it's doing LH.
My friend in Brooklyn, NY said they've been out in fire trucks clearing streets since early morning. So far we're good here. Lots of water we don't need but the eye hasn't moved past Virginia yet and hit us with the winds. They're supposed to come later tonight.

Be safe and get all your stuff above the water line.

I'm on the bay LH! But we're all battened down and I even plugged up the intake and return on the pool wall to make sure if the hoses come off, we don't flood the neighborhood with pool water. Smile

Just sitting around waiting now. Might make those steak dinners in a few minutes too since we still have 'lectricity.

Ever since the ice storm a few years back I have had a backup propane generator. I'm not getting stuck like I was last time. It's very quiet also you can barely hear it run.

RE: IRENE is coming! - Twitchin Kitten - 08-27-2011

OH we have a generator. It's in pieces in the shed. That's because Matt tried his hand at "fixing" it when it wouldn't start and it's been like that ever since.

It will get fixed after the storm when Dave next door comes home and takes it with him to work. I won't be stuck again. It's not propane though.

Do you get better "miles per gallon" with propane than gas?

RE: IRENE is coming! - LH - 08-27-2011

It burns alot cleaner and there is no "exhaust" I think it works better than my old gas one.

RE: IRENE is coming! - LH - 08-27-2011

When I ran my gas generator I made a double male cord, shut off the main coming in and just pugged it into the nearest plug by the breaker and backflowed the generator power into the house wiring. I shut off all non-essential stuff also. You are better off doing that with the 230v though through the dryer plug. But I use a propane dryer.
The transfer switch cost more than the generator did installed that was freakin 800.00 the generator was the floor model at work so I got that as used with 40% off the wholesale cost. I talked them into using a shell that was easier to move around. The total cost with the transfer switch installed was 1500.00 way cheaper than the 3000.00 and up some places charge.

Yeah, ours isn't that big. It'll handle a few things with an extension cord through a window or door.

We're good for about a week without power if it comes to it but I don't think it'll come down to that long. Couple days tops.
