Prez of hosting club [or high ranking member] gets spot #1. President's of other clubs that are attending the event are offered the next spots. Then its members of the hosting club. Then its a first come first serve basis.
When I am riding with the PGR I am a ride capt , so I get spot #1 or two [depending on weather or not my state capt is present] . When I am riding with the other club [1'st pic], my cuz is the prez so I get front row , unless other attending club prez wants the spot [ and they rarely do ] .

Whoever can piss highest against the fencepost.

The average biker "gang" behaves very much like a pack of wild dogs.

It sounds like you have ben a fence post a time or two.

I hate quoting myself , but I am to late to edit.

However, I should add, that this is the way we do it around here in the little league RC's that I ride with. It may be a totally different game when you step up to the major league MC's, or in different regions.

That's much the same rule here too. The leader is the one who planned the trip, the club are usually marshalls on the route to make sure no one gets left behind (me!) and the traffic doesn't get too pissed off with a couple of hundred bikes out on a day trip. They then follow through from the rear or some skip through to the finish using another route to guide everyone into where ever the trip ends.

Bike Night started last week! First trip today since we were away last week.
I was leader Smile
Me followed by No1 son, hubby and his mate from down the road. No1 son constantly puts himself in my blind spot to test I'm watching the road and have to move to get him back in vision. Little sod disappeared totally! A mile down the road look in the mirror (by this time joined by two more friends) I see a yellow/black CBR and a red/black CBR, No1 son and his mate Dan, flanking me either side.
As we came through the main road to the ferry port we had a clear road because the traffic lights held the bikes coming in from out of town. When I looked right I saw 8 police outriders waiting at the lights, so they had to follow us through the gates onto the quay.
Was I leader? Was I in the way? Well Dan and Phil didn't overtake me, bless them.

Also, here in the U.S.A., if its a very large group we'll have an escort of law enforcement. THEY will have the number one spot.
