They have been threatening to close it down for over 10 years. I doubt that it will happen because its become a part of the economy for Ashland and Mt Carmel.
Hell the Pioneer Tunnel tour wouldn't get as much traffic as it does if they closed off the Centralia site.
Idiot kids have been getting hurt there since day one when the highway was still open for traffic! Rt 61 was reopened after the first subsidence swallowed a 1967 Ford Country Squire station wagon! They "fixed it" and it was business as usual for another 3 years until the fire actually moved under the road. For quite some time they didn't have to plow or treat that section because the road surface never dropped below 67 degrees.

Well the Graffitti highway isn't quite the Centralia site. They just want to close off the graffiti highway. They won't lose any money from that as it's costing them to medivac the idiots out of there nearly every week. EVERY WEEK FFS!
Graffiti highway is no longer smoking. It's cool to the touch and really nothing spectacular, but we had fun.
So where on rt 61 is this area you're talking about? Are there mile markers too look for? Landmarks? OH and do NOT eat at Danny's drive in for burgers. LOL they have a sign out front that says "thicker burgers" which is a flat out lie! they're burnt and smaller than a white castle. I left a generously light bad review on yelp.

OH and it was the Pioneer Mine Tunnel we toured. I cannot find my SD card with all those photos on it and it's killing me. I got some good ones too.
