Use empty butter/margarine tubs as cheap leftover storage? Then you know the frustration of searching 2 or 3 tubs till you find the one that contains the margarine and not other stuff.
The easy answer is this......over the course of time, buy several different brands (hopefully in distinctly different looking containers) and when used for storage, use a non-matching lid.
By default the margarine will be the only one with a matching lid!

I try to use those used margarine tubs for stuff I take to work in my lunch, then I throw them out.

Mark keeps them for when we go on weekends in the camper. Just once in a while we forget to actually take the marg thinking it is packed. Not funny to open one 'think' its marg only to find its the custard topping to a trifle! Now I used indelible ink on the lid 'Trifle' 'Melon in red wine' 'matches' etc.
