God damn it.

Quote:DULUTH, Minn. — Residents evacuated their homes and animals escaped from their pens at a zoo as floods fed by a steady torrential downpour struck a city in northeastern Minnesota, officials said Wednesday.

Police officers helped track down a polar bear that got out of its enclosure overnight at the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth.

“Even though it’s a large white object, it’s pretty nerve racking,” police spokesman Jim Hansen said of the chase for Berlin, the female polar bear. Zoo officials said she was darted by the zoo’s vet and placed in quarantine.

Keely Johnson, zoo spokeswoman, told the Duluth Tribune that many of the zoo’s animals have drowned, including all but one of the zoo’s barnyard animals. She said the zoo’s donkey, goats and sheep have died. She said it’s possible others have drowned, as flooding on the grounds have consumed some of the exhibits, such as the raven and vulture cages.

“Obviously, our entire staff is devastated,” said Peter Pruett, the zoo’s director of animal management.

Officials said no animals left the zoo grounds and all have been secured.

Yeah, these things are awful if you witness them in person. When I was married we had a contract with the Philadelphia Zoo for upgrading their exhibits. One year, I forget how long ago - early 90's - they had a huge fire in the primate house. They lost all their gorillas and apes. It was really sad for us because we got to "know" some of the apes. Such gentle giants when they want to befriend you.

I got a dead rabbit on my driveway right now. Some fuck had to hit it on purpose. My street is NOT so busy you can't slow down for a rabbit. I'm lucky if 10 cars drive here daily. Probably those asshole kids that think this is a short cut or speedway.

I've heard guys brag about swerving to hit cats, hitting a rabbit on purpose wouldn't surprise me.

I wish Matt would get home so he can clean it up and bury it someplace.

There was a big uproar round here (relatively speaking) a couple months back. Some external contractor delivering sand in Kruger went speeding round a bend (the limit on tar is about 35mph and he was doing closer to 50) and ploughed through a herd of impala. Asshole killed 7 of them. He got the equivalent of a $300 fine. Highest they could give according to regulation. They eventually managed to impose a 2 year ban on him entering the park. Sadly, road kill is pretty common there, but generally 1 animal at a time.

Well, the bunny is buried. Dave next door was kind enough to let us bury it there. I'd have done it in my yard, but the damn dog would dig it up.

That asshole should get more than that for a fine! He's in a reserve for shit's sake. That means the animals are supposed to be protected. People get higher speeding fines around here without anything getting maimed or killed. Was he arrogant about it too? I bet he was.

Do they leave the dead impala around for scavengers to take advantage of?

The rule is here, if you knock an animal down the vehicle behind has rights to pick it up not the person who took it out.

We've been on car runs and knocked down a Pheasant and it just happens Simon would be following.
We would go to dinner a week or later..... Blush

That's an odd rule. Why can't the person who hit the animal take it? Some kind of punishment?

In Pennsylvania the general rule is that the vehicle that hit it gets first chance to take it if they wish. If they don't want it then it's open for anyone to take it. If nobody wants it then eventually the state crew comes and picks it up for disposal.

Perhaps they can round up these zoo animals, and get them to take the dead one's places. They are just next door.

And yeah, its political in nature. Sue me.Wacko
