Meh...I seen video of elephants charging people on these walks. But not much as far as lions go. Last time I went on one we heard a couple of them roaring at each other. One was a few hundred meters off. But the ranger reckons he saw us and disappeared. Claims to "know" the lions in that area and that they prefer to avoid human contact.

Most wildlife prefers to avoid human contact. Nothing good ever came for the wildlife when humans messed with them.

Elephants I can see getting pissed.

What about your insurance though? You didn't answer about the insurance if you start tours!

Hey PIG,
I will trade you a 7 day uninsured mountain bike tour of US hillbilly/redneck/whitetrash country for 7 days of uninsured SA viewing. I would like to see the wildlife and the slums. If we could view a native fight or two over drugs and some lions taking down some prey that would be a plus.
I will promise lots of toothless hillbillies and neck tattoos.

We each provide our own airfare and food money. Lodging/camping/sleeping arrangements will be up to the host.

That's a fair trade amongst friends!

If he takes on regular tourists though, he's going to need liability insurance.

Also I make no promises of not being molested by toothless hillbillies.

Twitch, you could also trade him a week in the city.

Does this go only for the corn fed ones, or for all of them?

I have not looked at insurance. Most of the operators (all the ones I've checked out) make you sign an indemnity form saying that what ever happens, it ain't their fault. I would check it out if it ever came to it though.

For a legit tour company, my research says I need a registered CC, and a professional driving permit. Apparently I need about $20 and no criminal record for that.

You said you were looking at $20k. Is that all in for 2 people, including airfaire? I could do this for in the region of $200 a day for 2.

That's food, lodging, tours, the works. This was a deluxe, super luxury deal. That was also in 1998.

Just so you know, those indemnity clauses are broken daily. I used to run a pony ride business and had customers sign a hold harmless agreement and I've been sued for things that were absolutely not my fault. Always made out the "winner" in the suits, but it winds up costing money to defend yourself. I had insurance on top of it and good thing! They provided the lawyers.

Africa I'm sure has a huge difference between laws and how people can screw you as a business owner. I can only tell you from my experiences as an indy business owner/operator dealing with animals and people. People suck.

Just do ALL the research you can and find out what you need to cover your ass in every situation you can think of. Since this is tourism, my first thoughts go to, "how much can I get fucked over by a pissed off tourist and what legal avenues are available to them to hassle me with?"

If you can do it on a "dime" go for it! I started my business with a borrowed pony and no money to start and I built it up from there. I expanded to 6 ponies in the rotation, the farm's main insurance policy covered me and I took an extra policy for $500 a year to cover bullshit suits and hold harmless agreements for when I was hired to do corporate events like company ball games and picnics. It really didn't cost me much to run the business per year and I made out very nicely all summer with my big weekend in September when I worked a Renaissance festival here in town. I would rake in $2k for 2 days work and my employees were kids who were happy to work for $50/day each in cash.
