I excerpted this from an article in the National Review Online.

***********************************************************
During a speech two weeks ago at the Daimler Truck manufacturing plant in Mount Holly, N.C., President Obama bantered with an audience member over his administration’s proposed Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards:

President Obama: Now, because of these new standards for cars and trucks, they’re . . . all going to be able to go farther and use less fuel every year. And that means pretty soon you’ll be able to fill up your car every two weeks instead of every week — and, over time, that saves you, a typical family, about $8,000 a year.

Audience Member: We like that!

President Obama: You like that, don’t you?

Audience Member: Yes! (Applause.)

What’s not to like? After all, the average driver currently spends only $1,745 on gas each year. With $8,000 in savings, the average family — even if we assume it has two or even three drivers in it — would earn thousands of dollars of profit from its gas consumption.
***********************************************************

This shows the ridiculous principle that the left in America subscribe to with respect to spending/savings/earnings.

Their belief is that if you spend less that it translates to earnings. This is plainly untrue and obvious to even the least educated. Savings are NOT earnings! They are simply the value of money NOT spent.

If one earns say $45,000.00 a year and spends $8,000.00 less on a given collective annual purchase it does not mean that the person therefore has earned $53,000.00!

I would also like to know who spends only $1,745.00/year on gas at the current prices? A more accurate figure would be in the range of $3,000.00/year.

The article goes on to state that the actual savings would likely be closer to $800.00/year as opposed to the figure stated by Obama at 10 times that. This would be assuming that the pump prices hold at the $4.00/gallon mark.
