The Tomcat was taken out of service due to bean counters figuring that 2 Hornets could take care of the same job as a 14 and due to the aging airframes it would be more cost effective to do that than rehab more Tomcats or order new frames. What they failed to realize though was that the Phoenix missile system is not equaled by any of the current systems used by the F/A - 18.

The hit rate of the Phoenix is a staggering 92%

Yes, I was including the EA-6B, which is the Prowler variant I was talking about. If I remember right, we still use them. Beautiful aircraft too. Made famous in the movie Flight of the Intruder, though the movie sucks compared to the book Biggrin

@Vizth

All the Silent Hunter games are easy as hell... IF you understand how to drive a farking ship Wink
Though sometimes finding enemy ships to sink without getting reamed by escorts can be hard.
Oh yeah, and @BM

I love the new F-22 Raptor though.. and the F-35

I hate doing this, but the EA-6B Prowler, and the A-6 Intruder, while technically the same plane, are truly two different jets. I know this because I worked on F-14's on the flight deck on an actual aircraft carrier. The Prowlers were up in the air providing electonic countermeasures. A-6's on the other hand, delivered a large amount of explosive ordinance with the help of her defender, the F-14.

btw, I enjoyed 'Flight of the Intruder' almost as much as 'Top Gun'. Both movies were somewhat accurate while, when it came to showing the cockpits of either jet...that was very inaccurate.

Hehehe, I do realize the loadouts on the Jets are different. Basically the only thing they shared was airframe, engines, and cockpit wasn't it? Between the EA-6B and A-6 I mean. Anyways, what about the tanker version of the A-6? I forget exactly what it was designated... do they still use it?

As for the Hornet vs. Tomcat thing, can't the SuperHornets carry the Phoenix? I thought that was one of the changes supposed to be made for the SuperHornet program? Or did it not end up happening?

As for the Phoenix success rate, I knew that one. If I had to face a MiG, I'd want a Phoenix or 2, or 6... on board every day. But they do say its outdated... and that the AIM-120 AMRAAM is a better missile overall. I don't know if its true, just what I've heard.

The F/A 18 is being phased out. Joint Strike Fighters are the new way to go, the YF-22 Raptor is being fitted with both land based capabilities, and aircraft carrier capabilities. I mean that one has a tailhook, and one doesn't. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines will soon be using the same Jet.

I gotta laugh, I kinda stopped reading this thread because my 8 years in the Air Force taught me nothing about planes.
I'm guessing RM is raido something?
I was in tele-communications, probably every thing we did, I mean the whole crew of us, 5-6 people per shift, round the clock, 7 days a week, could be done now with a PC and a few e-mails.

Whatever happened to the JSF project?

I suppose the Raptor is that good they scrapped it and just went with the 22.

The Raptor IS the 22 LOL!!

The F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II (JSF) are the 2 planes we're moving to.

The F-22 is an air superiority fighter, the F-35 is a strike (ground attack) fighter. They also happen to look a lot alike due to their stealth designs.

Right now the F-22 program is suspended though, mostly because we don't have a lot of need for an air superiority fighter and the F-35 is cheaper.

Actually I just read that this year Obama signed in a bill that TERMINATES the F-22 program in favor of the F-35. Yet we're still keeping the F-18 production lines, in order to make the EA-18 Growler, the replacement for the EA-6B Prowler. Bastards. Biggrin

I know the Raptor is the F-22. Please let me clarify:

I said "I suppose the Raptor is that good they scrapped it (*JSF*)and just went with the 22". The part in parenthesis should clarify that.....Mkay? Biggrin

Suspended the F-22 program? What an idiot! We need to have both ground attack capabilities AND air superiority/dominance. But what do you expect from a dolt who wouldn't know how to run a military operation if he had to.

[sarc]What the fuck....let's just use A-10 Warthogs for everything. They're tough and dogfight schmogfight they can kill tanks! Who needs air defense fighters anyhow? [/sarc]
