Wasn't sure where this would belong, so move it if you need to TK.

Does anyone have a SF where they come from?
We have a HUGE one in MN. It's all about the food. Deep fried Twinkies, chocolate dipped bacon, deep fried alligator, turkey drumsticks, corn on the cob, pronto pups, deep fried snicker bars just to name a few.

I haven't been in close to 10 years but it's a beautiful day and I am trying to con the old man into going. If I make it I will take many pix of all the fairgoers. The people watching is even better than it is at Wal-Mart.

I dunno why I look at this stuff.
This thing is only 42 years old, does not run and has water damage, all for only $500. My first question is, What part of your yard do you never want to see or have grass grow on again?
Then I think maybe if I could get it to run long enough to get it to the parking lot of that place maybe I could just leave it there, run a long extension cord and a garden hose to it. You know, I could take breaks in it, naps at lunch time, catch some sleep when I double back, or cook a quick meal or two. Maybe even rent it out by the 20 minute interval for those at work quickies that no one is ever supposed to find out about.
Or maybe it would scrap out for more than $500?
I'll buy it, someone else go get it and part it out, sell it for scrap and we'll split 50/50.
42 years old....

I'm using a free dial up service here in Michigan called DialInFree. Its provided as a public service by a Michigan based BroadBand ISP.

Lately I've been getting some amazingly insane speeds for dialup.

I've got several screenshots of it. Now keep in mind that 147Kbps (kilobaud/sec) is 14.7KBps (kilobytes/sec). Still, thats pretty high throughput for dialup. It gets better though, I didn't capture a screenshot fast enough, but a download I was doing was going at 128KBps, yes thats the B not the b!! I was able to nab a screenshot of it at 48.3KBps though. Sure this is spotty, and never lasts more than 2-3 minutes... but while it does last its very nice.

The crazy download:
And 3 shots of the Network monitor with the crazy high speeds otherwise:

Drew Barrymore is mourning the death of her beloved dog Flossie -- the pooch whose barking saved her life when a fire engulfed her home in 1998.

The "Charlie's Angels" star doted on her adopted chow-yellow Labrador mix, and even credited the pooch with saving her and ex-husband Tom Green when a fire ripped through their Beverly Hills home in May 1998.

Flossie passed away last month, and the actress honored her beloved pet by spreading her ashes across the Ganges river during a recent trip to India -- considered to be one of the most sacred spots in the world.

And now she's working on training a new pup, whose picture she showed off on David Letterman's late night U.S. talk show on Tuesday, before revealing Flossie's death.

She said, "That is my new dog, Douglas... I rescued him. He was brought to the pound when he was two weeks old, he's six months.

"I had three other dogs, one of which, Flossie, was an infamous little soul -- I had her until she was almost 16. She passed away about a month ago. She had such a good life and what more could you ask for than 16 years with your soulmate sidekick?

"I actually brought some of her ashes to India and put them in the Ganges, which is a very sacred thing to do."

I got her today. She's outside in the crate in the shade. Pissed as hell. Freaked out a little too. But she's safe and will definitely take a lot longer than Sofie to settle in for sure.

I was able to snap a couple of pictures of her, before capture and after.

She actually was pretty easy. I got there, took the crate and food out and opened the crate door. Went back to the truck for the camera and found her halfway in the crate! I got there fast enough to shove her ass in and shut the door on her. Man, was she mad! Tough. In two days she's going to know things are much better here.

So, she's outside and I'm hoping the fleas jump off her there before bringing her in. Ideally I'd like to bathe her but I don't feel like getting bit.

Now I gotta see about getting some vaccines in the two of them, rabies shots and dewormed. Good thing I can do shots on my own.

Sorry for the blurry pics. I was hurrying.
The ASPCA is excited to announce the upcoming release of The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick’s Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption by Sports Illustrated senior editor Jim Gorant (Gotham Books: September 2010; $26.00). The book covers the Vick case from beginning to end, explaining how Vick and his cohorts were caught, detailing the abysmal treatment of the animals and examining the difficult path to rehabilitation—and the ultimate triumph—of dozens of abused dogs.

Luckily, you won’t have to wait until September to learn more about The Lost Dogs—Parade magazine, which is bundled with the Sunday editions of more than 500 newspapers nationwide, is running a feature article on the book and the lives of the rescued dogs this weekend. Look for the article on Sunday, or visit Parade’s website for a sneak peek today.

During the Michael Vick investigation, the ASPCA’s forensic veterinary team, led by Dr. Melinda Merck, helped produce the evidence that led to guilty pleas. The ASPCA’s Dr. Stephen Zawistowski, Executive Vice President, and Dr. Randy Lockwood, ASPCA Senior Vice President, Forensic Sciences and Anti-Cruelty Projects, led a team of certified applied animal behaviorists in behavior evaluations of nearly 50 rescued dogs; as a result, all but one were spared euthanasia. This was an unprecedented outcome for seized fighting dogs at the time. Drs. Merck and Zawistowski are quoted extensively in Gorant’s new book.

The Lost Dogs can be preordered now on Amazon.com and will soon be available for purchase from the ASPCA Online Store.
USA: Airline’s Puppy Deaths Spark Debate about Commercial Breeders

Airline’s Puppy Deaths Spark Debate about Commercial Breeders

As animal lovers become more aware that purchasing a dog from a pet store supports the inhumane practices of puppy mills, commercial breeders are using online sources to get their dogs directly into homes across the country.

On August 3, seven puppies died of suspected heat-related complications in the cargo hold of a plane en route from Tulsa, OK, to Chicago, IL. The victims were seven of 14 pups transported by the airline, and reportedly came from a commercial breeder in Oklahoma—many of the puppies were booked on connecting flights, making it likely that they were purchased online by buyers in different cities.

“Puppy mill operators are creating professional looking websites that convincingly dupe consumers into thinking they are reputable breeders,” says Cori Menkin, ASPCA Senior Director of Legislative Initiatives. “A sure way to spot a scam is that they often offer to ship the dogs to the buyer without ever meeting in person. No reputable breeder would ever ship a puppy to a buyer sight unseen.”

Buying a puppy over the Internet is just as risky as buying from a pet store—you can’t see the puppy’s breeding premises or meet his parents. Furthermore, those who sell animals online are not held to regulations established by the Animal Welfare Act.

“The Animal Welfare Act requires breeders to be licensed and meet specific minimum standards of care for animals bred for resale, but a loophole allows puppy breeders who sell directly to the public—which includes over the Internet—to go unregulated,” says Menkin. “They are able to keep inspectors away and operate without being accountable to anyone.”
“The bottom line is the only way to be sure your new puppy isn't a product of cruel and inhumane conditions is to see for yourself where he lives—visit the breeder’s facilities and meet the puppy’s parents,” Menkin states. “Or better yet, adopt from your local shelter.”
