I need help with replacing the bearings in my Schwinn Mesa. I have mechanic's background and taking it apart isn't an issue, it is what to replace the ball bearings with that I want to know about. Do I replace the cup and bearings themselves, can I fit sealed bearings in there? Where can I find the original size bearings and such?
If I remember correctly, the cheaper huffy's and stuff, (maybe your Schwinn) would have some sort of crappy bearings in a crappy sealed type cup. But anything worth it's salt will have individual loose bearings that can be taken out, cleaned and repacked and replaced, or replaced. Any decent bike shop will sell you individual bearings of the correct size. Hell, they will sell you one ball if that is all you want.
Most of the trick to working on bikes is having the correct tools. For wheel bearing you need really skinny wrenches to get in there and do it right.
We are talking about wheels, right? Or crank (bottom bracket) bearings, that's usually a whole other story.
I just looked at a Schwinn Mesa...it looks like decent bike!!!
Are we talking wheel bearings or crank bearings? Both are easy you just need a tool or two to get the job done.
