So, my computer is on its way home. Yahoo They had to repair the motherboard and then did a system restore. I am hoping then I did not lose any data. Should have it back in a couple days. Clap

Unless they backed up the hard drive and put all your data back, you lost it all. A system restore means they wiped the hard drive and brought it back to factory settings. It will be like you just bought it and turned it on for the first time.

With any luck they'll have backed up your old drive for you.

Got it back this afternoon. TK, you were right, all wiped clean. Plus they pit IE9 on. Not used to it. Did not send hard drive back, but everything I lost is easily replaced. It is not backed up all in one central place, and it will take time to replace everything, but it will be a good project to keep me out of trouble.
So if I am not here for a while, that is why.
Sorry

Well that certainly sucks! You should try FireFox instead of IE too.

If Dylan pops on maybe he can suggest a good back up program for you to use. I couldn't even begin to suggest one. My computer has one built in and it backs up automatically every hour. If I had to restore, it's a matter of connecting the external storage drive to the computer and pushing a button to bring it all back as it was. I was even able to replicate this desktop onto the new laptop that way. I don't know of any windows programs that do the same thing but I'm sure they are out there. At least something similar.

I don't envy the task you have ahead.

There are Windoze programs before it, but all the ones that work good that I know of cost money, and a lot of it. I'll poke around on some tech sites though and maybe I can find one.

Gotta love all Linux/UNIX based systems (including Solaris and Mac) since they all have multiple server grade options available for free Tongue

So... my favorite backup program for Linux is available for Winblows too!

http://www.amanda.org/

And for a list of a bunch of freeware backup software (Amanda included):
http://sourceforge.net/directory/os:wind.../?q=backup
Just realize I don't really know the majority of these softwares so you'll need to evaluate them for your own purposes.

I know that several people I have encountered in my years on the interwebz have mentioned Lynux. I have used Chrome in the past, and found it simply OK.

Chrome really has nothing to do with Linux except that Google made Chrome OS, which is Linux with the Chrome browser running the desktop...

There are a lot of different Linux out there, I personally use Mageia most often, Fedora sometimes, and CentOS for servers.

For a newbie to try it out I would recommend either Mageia or Mint and use a LiveCD so you can try it without installing it on your computer.
Mageia 2 LiveCD: 32bit - 64bit
Linux Mint LiveCD (Needs blank DVD not CD): 32bit - 64bit
