If you come to NYC we'll go with you to the Intrepid museum. We keep wanting to go but never make it. Some seedy bar downtown usually reels us in. Blush but Matt really wants to go.
He heard they have Tomcats on there now and wants to show me his plane.

Hey! I just remembered that Fleet Week is on Memorial Day! Hopefully we can get into the city and yell SQUIIIIID!

Matt was an Airman on the USS Roosevelt during the first Gulf War. He maintained planes, launched them off the deck and other things.

here's a pic of him launching a jet - seriously, he says this is him.

The Tomcat is such a great plane...

I think it holds the record as the longest serving fighter aircraft in the US Military...

Just as I'm pretty sure the A-6 Intruder holds the record for the longest serving Attack aircraft too. Not sure if its Electronic Warfare configuration (The Prowler) or its Aerial Refueling configuration are still in use or not, but I think so... We don't use it as a attack craft (what they call fighter sized Navy Bombers these days) anymore, since we use the F/A-18 Hornet and SuperHornet in that role now. But yeah...

Both the F-14 and A-6 are great aircraft and very long serving regardless Smile

Maybe because the entire MoH series of games is based on reality? Tongue

And thanks Vizzy, that is VERY cool. For those who don't know, I'm a WWII junkie. I love the technology, especially Naval, of that time period. I own all the Silent Hunter games (a series of WWII submarine simulations where you play the commander of german subs, though in the more recent SH games you can play americans too!) except the latest one. I also own MoH & MoH:Rising Sun. I also own the Band of Brothers boxed set from HBO, and I plan on getting The Pacific when it comes out. Yeah, I'm a freak. Biggrin

I snagged SH4 recently, SH5 runs like crap on my machine. How the hell do you play this game? i cant even get the sub to turn in the right direction, it's learning curve is worse than eve's.

It's an old teletype machine, it spit out a paper tape with holes in it that was read by a tape reader. Yeah, at one time I could even read the holes in the tape. Hell, I probably still could if I could find some.
I used to even be able to read some of the punches in the old data cards too.

While, I do have to agree that the Tomcat is a great plane, the F-15 will take the title of longest serving fighter in about 2 years, with no end in sight. Why they decomissioned the Tomcat, I'll never know. I loved working on this jet, be it humping chains up and down the flight deck as a line rat, to being the final yea or nay flight deck trouble shooter, to simply working on her electronics. Sucks that 'Anytime Baby' is now 'Bye Bye Baby'!

Now, the A-6 was retired in 97' if you are including the EA-6B, you might be right about longest serving, but the A-6 itself had a rather short history with the Navy.

@BM

Yes, I was including the EA-6B, which is the Prowler variant I was talking about. If I remember right, we still use them. Beautiful aircraft too. Made famous in the movie Flight of the Intruder, though the movie sucks compared to the book Biggrin

@Vizth

All the Silent Hunter games are easy as hell... IF you understand how to drive a farking ship Wink
Though sometimes finding enemy ships to sink without getting reamed by escorts can be hard.
Oh yeah, and @BM

I love the new F-22 Raptor though.. and the F-35
