Two patios, one weekend - Twitchin Kitten - 06-29-2014 So I got sick of the dog dragging in schmutz from the yard because the sun is so hot it doesn't let grass grow very well. I decided since Home Depot had blocks on sale for $1 each, it's time to build a patio. I built this one out the back and then went for under the pergola so we have a nice level area for poolside chillin' and no dirt and bugs. ![]() I'm hoping the grass grows fast where I filled in with soil. I'll throw some seed on there in the fall. Nothing will start now as far as grass is concerned. Some stuff is pushing up through already. I used a bull float to level it and a flat board to check lev with the 4' level and then tweaked as Matt handed me blocks. The one by the door isn't as perfect as the pergola but it slopes purposefully away from the foundation. I'm not good with decks. Sorry. Next project is the side door stoop. I got enough leftover block and all I need is a bag of quickcrete. RE: Two patios, one weekend - AnthonyG - 07-01-2014 Did you use edge restraints on the outer blocks or did you just lay them out? RE: Two patios, one weekend - Twitchin Kitten - 07-01-2014 Laid them out and put soil up against. Once the grass grows it will be fine. We did this on the cheap. RE: Two patios, one weekend - TenFour - 07-01-2014 looks nice did you put crushed oyster shells under your pavers? permanent weed blocker/killer just use enough to cover the ground in a thin layer RE: Two patios, one weekend - Twitchin Kitten - 07-01-2014 (07-01-2014, 01:42 PM)TenFour Wrote: looks nice did you put crushed oyster shells under your pavers? Nope. Sandy soil was enough. A little late for weed killer, but it was done when we tilled the ground RE: Two patios, one weekend - AnthonyG - 07-01-2014 The blocks will shift and sink and raise up in about 2 years if you don't put the edging in, edging is not very expensive for those patios you made it should be around 100 dollars. I built my patio and my neighbors hired a guy to do theirs, he didn't put edging I did and their patio looks like mini mountains of Scotland, mine looks like the day I finished it. I am just saying it because I dont think you will want to have to re do it in a few years especially since it looks good right now. RE: Two patios, one weekend - twisteroo - 07-02-2014 What do you use that swing for? ![]() RE: Two patios, one weekend - Twitchin Kitten - 07-02-2014 (07-01-2014, 06:07 PM)AnthonyG Wrote: The blocks will shift and sink and raise up in about 2 years if you don't put the edging in, edging is not very expensive for those patios you made it should be around 100 dollars. No they won't. I had a 6x6 pad under the grill for 10 years just stuffed into the ground without any prep or anything and it was fine. I don't care anyway. I plan on being out of here soon.
