John Carter - Twilla - 06-15-2012

I really don't understand why this movie bombed, I thought it was a lot of fun. I had read the book ages ago and I never liked how the hero was magically whisked away to Mars. This movie did an excellent job of explaining it and I had a fun trip along the way. It reminded me how I felt the first time I saw the very first Star Wars movie (episode 4?) with some less cartoony Flash (wooohooo) Gordon circa 1980 thrown in.

I liked it.

I never read the book. Is it worth reading at all compared to the movie?

It'd be a good book at the pool or beach. Not a lot of substance but it's fun.

It was Edgar Rice Burroughs' follow up to Tarzan. Carter appeared in one of the last Tarzan comic strip stories. That was his segue to the John Carter series of books.

Its not just 'the' book, but a series of books. I enjoyed them when I was in college, but there are far better out there to read. Burroughs was one of those late Victorian style writers.
