A mushroom enthusiast at another forum posted a photo he took of a morel and I gotta say, this thing is utterly repulsive looking. He's going on and on about how delicious they taste buy I can't get past the fact that it looks slimy.

Um, the slug on the thing (on it's left on the leaf) does not help in making that look appetizing.
I love mushrooms but not every one of them. That thing looks rubbery, chewy and tough and it does not look like it will lose the slime in cooking.
OK as I was just about to add that I can't stand Shitake mushrooms, Matt walked in and says, "Oh that's a morel! Those are the most delicious mushrooms! You should try it." He also said that it does not have any of the bad qualities I described above.

I'd try any mushroom as long as it wasn't just found out in the pasture by some schmuck.

Well if the background was steak and shrimp instead of dirt and worms than it might look more appetizing.

I've picked a few colorful 'shrooms off the manure pile before the sun hit it in my time.

my Italian Grandmother gathered mushrooms in the wild, and it scared me to death! but the old-country old-timers knew what they were doing evidently, she didn't kill any of us.
i LOVE mushrooms, but have not tried the morel.

Just don't eat red ones! Mushrooms with red will kill you in minutes.
Don't eat them if they are hit by sunlight.
Mushrooms are best picked before the sun is fully up and it's still cool and damp with dew. After that you can watch them shrivel up in the sun and disappear into mushroom oblivion.
I like to pick fresh puffballs in the lawn after an evening or early morning rain.

You hear about someone every year that knew what they were doing and ate wild mushrooms for years that fucked up one day. I guess the liver shuts down and you are pretty much done.
