Creating a food stock pile to last 5 years is stupid, you will either die from the environment or someone will come and kill you and take what you have before then. All I could justify in prepping besides having firearms to defend yourself is having a few months supply of food and having a hardy form of transportation. The guy on that show in season one that bought the deuce and a half with the metal cab on the back was a smart man it was basically a armored mobile home that could run on any sort of fuel he found including pure motor oil. The trucks run about 4-5k dollars its a decent investment, plus you can have fun running over everything you want when society is still intact.
I loved the first episode with the hippy husband and wife that made a compound out of shipping containers and they were like today we are testing the security of our compound they went out 50 yards and shot the container with a .22 rifle. I guess they are going to be totally secure.... Ill just shoot through both ends of their whole compound with my 30/30 lol.

I like the one guy that doesn't like guns because you can run out of ammunition, so he has throwing sticks.
Also his alarm system was bird feeders in stead of say a German Shepard.

I'd say both. But hell, if the world gets nuked, all that survival stockpiling of food and supplies is useless anyway. Your skin's gonna melt off and you're gonna die in a week. Food is the last thing anyone will be concerned about. best to have a gun and off yourself to spare the agony.

When the nukes hit the point of the guns is to put them in your mouth hehe . When I mentioned the food stock pile I was including water automatically because you cant live more then a few days without water.
