It's so much nicer to use. Just scoop out the poop, fluff, shake and when the pellets are gone, change out to new pellets.

OH and I forgot to mention, you only need a THIN layer of pellets to get half a box of 'fluff'. I only put down a literal inch of pellets - just enough to cover the bottom. What you see in that box is from skimping out because I ran out late last night and only had enough to cover half the bottom. But as you see, it's FINE! Going to hit Pet Smart later for a new bag of 40#'s tonight.

The only problem I see with the plan is for us pet smart is a full hour drive away. Sad but with our dedication to bulk buying 2 or 3 bundles of pellets would be fine by us a month.

Buy it online and have it delivered. Smile

This is what we use for litter boxes, once a year or so I make new ones with an old butcher knife and a propane torch. We use Yesterday's News, I know it's not the cheapest litter but it makes everyone happy. Nice tall sides so nothing gets kicked out.
I should take pics of where the cat boxes are.

I also wonder, I heat the house with wood pellets and pay maybe $4 for a 40 pound bag, if they get wet they swell and turn kind of mushy just like the yesterdays news of feline pine does. I wonder what the harm would be in using that? I mean I pay more for the cats to poop than to heat my house.

Yesterday's News is cheap! Why do you say it's not "the cheapest"?

I like your idea for litter boxes! I wish I thought of that when I was trying to figure out what works best for me. I like my set up now.

How small are those pellets you use to heat the house? If they are about the same size, I don't see any harm in it unless they treat those things with some kind of oil or other flammable material to help things along fire-wise.

RE: Early morning useless post thread - twisteroo - 09-14-2010

The wood pellets are the same size as yesterdays news and maybe just a touch bigger than feline pine. They are not supposed to be treated, if they had glue or anything on them they would actually burn too hot for the stoves.
Yesterdays new is not as cheap as clay and some of the other stuff out there.
OK, I took some pics of the set up. Don't make fun of my shack or the dirtyness there of.

Hopefully this all makes sense, the go out to the back shed through the little doors to the boxes that are enclosed, then we (she) lifts the lids does the cleaning and stuff all out in the back shed, litter and everything never even actually comes into the house.
That is another thing with yesterdays news, it does not track. Every once in a very great while piece might show up somewhere, but it don't happen often.

RE: Early morning useless post thread - Twitchin Kitten - 09-14-2010

That's a neat set up you have! I don't have a mud room nor another outdoor area to build such a thing. Next house maybe! I have no intention of staying in this house forever.

See, now I don't use the regular clay litter. I find it way too stinky and it gives me the same scratchy destruction of the boxes the clumpy kind did.

yesterday's news gets very pissy smelling on me. Maybe my cats have strong urine or something but it isn't as manageable as the Pine for me. Either way, it's much cheaper than the clumpy kind which is supposed to save the most $$ because you "dont' need to change the box, ever" Barf

I was soaking and cleaning boxes all the damn time with that stuff. My set up has me doing litter box work about 10 minutes total throughout the day. That's figuring high.

The Yesterday's News and the Feline Pine track on me, how the hell do you do it without tracking?

RE: Early morning useless post thread - Twitchin Kitten - 09-14-2010

That paneling you have in your bathroom is what we're getting rid of in our rooms now. That flower shit by my litter box is next. Stupid vinyl covered particle board is what it is! Awful stuff. We slowed down a lot on the home improvement projects because every time we tackle a room, it winds up being a major renovation.

cool set up...
