This My Little Pony is something 'Student' related, like The Wombles when I was at college (then The Clangers, and The Magic Round-a-bout). Students here latch onto a kiddies programme and then the producers get confused because they discover it has a HUGE following only to find students are upping the TV viewing ratings. Now of course it's the internet 'hits'
