RE: The Completely Pointless Thread II - Twitchin Kitten - 07-07-2014 Wtf? The quotes are not working on the mobile theme. I tried to quote your car wash comment. Yep, GT Premium with Track Apps. Book clearly says with track apps it takes 5-50. They tried to tell me that the book doesn't mean anything. Seriously? So then why is Ford wasting all that money on paper let alone development of lubrication, technology, and the proper care for the vehicle? Never mind that it clearly says right on the engine that it takes the 50 weight oil. RE: The Completely Pointless Thread II - Biker Dude - 07-07-2014 I had to look, but it was pretty easy to find that 5W50 was what it called for. It's a new weight to me. RE: The Completely Pointless Thread II - Twitchin Kitten - 07-07-2014 I'm familiar with cars that require heavier oil. I had a '76 Alfa Romeo Alfetta and that called for a straight 50 weight oil. In the winter you would use a lighter oil of 5W 30. I caught the mistake because I got bored as a passenger the other day and thoroughly read the paperwork from the oil change. RE: The Completely Pointless Thread II - LKTraz - 07-08-2014 5W50 is becoming a more common oil weight with today's performance engines. Diesels have been using heavier weights for a while and some of them are also approved for both gas and diesel engines. You need to sook for "S" and "C" ratings. S being gas and C being diesel. If there are S only ratings (SF....SE....SC etc) they are gas only as just C ratings would be diesel only. For example, Rotella T 15W 40 is rated CE CF CC CD SF SD SC SE. It can be used with a pretty wide range of both gas and diesel engines. Being a bit heavier it works great in higher mileage gas engines and is the recommended oil for most new diesels. I use it in my vehicles because of 1) the heavier weight and 2) I can get it at work for all but free! ![]() I have seen some new high horse engines call for 10w 50 and 1 or 2 using 20W 50 for warm/hot weather conditions. Pretty much it's due to better oil pumps/return journals in new engines. The heavier oils provide a better film coating at more extreme heat and harder operating conditions. Just imagine this......top fuel engines are typically running 20W 80 oil! RE: The Completely Pointless Thread II - Twitchin Kitten - 07-08-2014 I know LK! But it pissed me off to no end that the dealer tried to tell me that I'm out of my mind for minding the manual Ford put out. I FINALLY found the oil change schedule in the book and as usual, the dealer rep was wrong as to when it should be changed. Well, half wrong. 6 months or 5000 miles. The sticker for reminding me that they put on the car tells me to do it again in November. That's 4 months and they put the mileage at 3000, whichever comes first. |
