If I had to hear any Beatles music it makes me want to put my head in a vat of hot oil. Never liked them.

That guy tried to sell me a pink bike last night! Rofl I told him I'd rather ride a Hello Kitty bike than be caught dead on something like that! It was god awful Fugly too.

He was showing me some with disc brakes. One with 'brake pads' and another with hydraulic disc brakes. What's the deal with that? Good? Bad? one more thing to go wrong? Maintenance whore? What about if they get wet and I need to stop? He says "on a dime" then I asked if oil got on it, said the same.

That Sedona model had gear shifters that were 'part of' the handlebars. Meaning it was "wrapped around" it at the end of the grips and you 'twist' them. 21 gear cassette. I think he said Giant starts with 21 gears which is fine by me. I'm using 18 now. All internal workings on the shifters were plastic. He says no one makes metal internal workings anymore. But he boasted how the cables (inside the casing) were metal. Gee, really? eesh.

I would ride a hello kitty bike!

I'm sure disc brakes are just fine, I don't have any though. hydraulic disc brakes are supposed to be better than mechanical, oil verses cable.
I figure that you don't see disc brakes in the tour de france, I don't need them. I actually think that disc brakes are heavier than the old style, that's why they don't race with them. Going to a model with discs adds $$$. Probably nice to have but not needed as far as I'm concerned, unless you take up downhill mountain biking or something.
Since I gave up on my old huffy, I have not had any problems with brakes, even my mountain bike with wore out brake pads still stopped good, just made some noise.

I also don't like the twist shifters, if you are really grabbing the bar on some rough stuff or going up a hill or something, there is the chance of shifting when you don't want to. Twisters are for kids and women, or something like that.
I don't know what's inside of the shifters, I don't really want to know. I just want them to keep working. Oil the cables now and again (once a year) and they should be fine.

RE: The Completely Pointless Thread - Twitchin Kitten - 09-02-2010

I wasn't thrilled with the twist shifters at all. It wasn't comfortable and it was shoved too close to the stem. I have small hands. I don't need to be shifting my hand position all over just to shift. Gone are the days of shifters on the frame or fork upright! I am pretty sure they'll give me shifters anywhere I ask and any style I ask for.

As for the brakes, I don't know if I'll ever be getting to any heavy trail ride competition level or street riding level that a couple of ounces of metal will make a difference to me on the brakes. Right now my front brake is the one that actually stops me and the rears slow me down. If I make the cable any tighter in the rear it rubs the wheel. Yes I changed the cables.
I shall ask the bike guy about brakes again. He was really trying to sell me those hydraulic things so I know there had to be a considerable cost difference.

FYI.... Hello Kitty rules.

On a different note.... I'm working in the basement today to get all the laundry Matt left on the floor done and everything else up off the floor any way I can in case we flood tomorrow. I have no idea why but my basement STINKS like dog. My dogs are not allowed down there and there is nothing of theirs fermenting in the basement waiting to be washed. I have a feeling it's leftover aroma from when I just changed the guts in their beds. I have the stinkiest dogs on the planet, I swear! Bathing them weekly matters not one whit.

Reminds me when someone came home with the whole series of Cap't Pugwash. I loved that, unfortunately so did my kids. Each 15 minutes episode played the Hornpipe twice! I was willing to walk the plank Crazy

RE: The Completely Pointless Thread - kbear - 09-02-2010

Sure glad I don't have kids at home any more. I know I could not listen to the same thing over and over.

Our air is working again, it is getting cool in here again!! Thank you air guy for coming so fast!!! It was up to 81 in here today.

And we are going to get to 97 on Friday!!!!!!

RE: The Completely Pointless Thread - Twitchin Kitten - 09-02-2010

Our air decided to not work so well today either. Turned out the filter was thick with schmutz. We got a new filter and apparently it isn't allowing the air to flow through well enough. I took it out and I hope to hell this house cools off! It's 81 in here too!
