pretty sure anyone renting out Poe's house won't be a slumlord, historic properties have pretty strict laws about maintenance.

Yep and I'm sure a call to the landlord to fix it will result in action.
Owning a house is the money pit, not renting. Well, aside from the insane rent prices in the city but when you factor in expenses for major repairs like a new roof, or french drains in a basement, appliance replacement and other things that need doing over time, it almost makes up for the crazy rents in NYC these days.

It's not the entire house that is for rent, just his apartment.
